The enormous pickle jar that I’ve transformed into an amazing hand painted solar lantern was donated by my stepdad – I’m so lucky to have my family’s support in my crafty endeavours!
When I say ‘enormous’ I don’t think the photos really show just how big this solar lantern is! Excluding the solar panel, the jar’s height from base to mouth is a whopping 23cm. Its width at its widest part is 15cm, and its depth is 12cm. The weight is 1115g – this is a hefty piece of glass!
I’ve painted this solar lantern in one of my rainbow leaves designs, so there’s three rows of leaves changing colour from red through to violet. It will look beautiful sitting on a sunny window sill and the sun shining through the glass will create rainbows on the widow sill’s surface.
But it’s at night that this piece really comes to life. Those rainbows spread out like crazy! I photographed the solar lantern in my bath to give you an idea of just how brightly those rainbows shine.
This solar lantern can be used inside and outside – the paint is weatherproof although rainwater will be able to get through the foam that holds the lamp in place, so if you’re using the lantern outside you may have to empty it of water from time to time. Or just bring it indoors if it rains.
The solar lamp is self-charging in the sun, of course, but even solar rechargeable batteries have a shelf life so they will need replacing occasionally – you can buy rechargeable solar batteries in most garden centres, Home Bargains, B&M or Amazon.
To clean the solar lantern, just wipe it with a damp cloth. Don’t scrub, don’t soak, and don’t put it in the dishwasher.
