A truly stunning piece of glassware, even if I do say so myself!
This is a hand painted upcycled Admiral Rodney rum bottle from St Lucia. It’s my hubby’s favourite rum but it costs a fortune, so he hardly ever gets any. And when he does, he makes it last! Luckily, his dad also loves it so I now have two sources of the empty bottles – but seriously, both father and son don’t drink more than a bottle a year each, so if I get two a year to paint and sell on I consider myself lucky!
The glass is thick and heavy – the decanter weighs some 970g – and the bottle is stopped up with its original stopper which is made from cork topped with polished wood that reminds me of an oversized conker! The width and depth are just over 9cm, the height excluding the stopper is around 17cm, and the height including the stopper is 20cm.
I’ve painted the design using durable oil- and water-based specialist glass paints, heat fixed for colourfastness and a wonderful clarity and transparency. You can wash the bottle gently in warm, soapy water, but please don’t soak it, put it in the dishwasher or use a scourer or brush. A gentle wipe with a soft cloth or sponge is best.
The hand painted poinsettia design looks gorgeous under daylight or artificial light – or you can fill the decanter with fairy lights which also look fantastic. But I’d personally be inclined to use this as an actual decanter, because it’s a very special, festive piece that would look great on any festive bar! Why not pair it with a matching poinsettia and holly hand painted glass carafe vase and make a real show of it this winter? 🙂
